"PULLS  NO PUNCHES"

The Tanner is a one man play about a violent historical period in Scots history. A searing portrayal of the battles fought by William Wallace, as seen through the eyes of a common soldier.

"McSherry is a master storyteller, electrifying and mesmerizing. The tanner is crude, brutal, and defiant, bloodied, but unbowed, at times a twinkle in his eye, at times a tear." Eileen Weiner. LA Theatre review."

The play predates the Mel Gibson Hollywood epic ‘Braveheart’ by some years and does not indulge in the romanticising, glamourising, ‘modern interpretation’ of real events so well loved in the film industry. The play has been verified as historically accurate by the University of Edinburgh department of History and pulls no punches.

The language used is rough and direct, as you would expect from a ‘common’ soldier and, therefore, could offend some of a more delicate disposition. It is therefore advised that the audience be restricted to 18+ (or teens in the company of a responsible adult).

The play has received awards for performances in the UK and abroadis  touring venues and communities all over Scotland.

Review

North East Theatre Review- Edinburgh Fringe

Best at Fringe award. Five star

Alex McSherry performs a great single-handed play about William Wallace’s fight against the English. Taken from the point of view of a tanner who fought alongside Wallace, we get the blood and guts.

In fact, we get lots of bodily fluids, thus is the nature of a tanner’s work. The flyer suggests 18+ but to be honest this strong, passionate performance will go down well with 15+. Robust language features in films with this cert and the descriptive power of McSherry is something a GCSE/Standard Level student should witness. This was a real emotional treat.

After the show, Alex invites audience members to the Café to take part in a discussion, about Scottish History.

The cafe will serve cakes, biscuits, tea, coffee and soft drinks  CASH ONLY.
